Kress Co. was founded by Samuel H. Kress. He hired architects to give his storefronts unique designs to compete with Woolworths and S.S. Kresge. He opened a store in Enid in 1908 at a cost of $27,000. Prior to 1908, Johnston's Grain had occupied that corner. In 1910 the Bonair Hotel opened above the store, and in 1917 it was remade into the Sherman Apartments. In 1972, Dollar General occupied the building.
